The Rolling Stones: On Camera, Off Guard (Book & DVD)

What's that ?
Do you think it's worth my while ?

Still going strong after 40 years, The Rolling Stones have proved themselves to be the ultimate rock band. While we are familiar with images of the band from the last 20 or so years, this book takes a pictorial journey back to roots of rock stardom and to a long-lost age of innocence in the music industry. Featuring over 200 pages of extremely rare photographs - most never previously published - as well as a DVD of fantastic Stones' footage, this book presents fascinating behind-the-scenes action from the life of the band during the '60s. From the very first studio photos of the band taken for "Mirabelle" magazine to pictures of Mick jumping on a piano at the Isle of Man anniversary in 1965, these images provide a compelling new look at some of our most familiar rock faces. Interviews with many of the photographers responsible for the images and additional background from the author complete this must-have record of The Stones in action.

About the Author
Mark Hayward is an established collector of music and popular culture photography and memorabilia, who has gathered an unrivalled collection of material over the last 25 years. His previous books include The Beatles Unseen (Orion 2005) and The Rolling Stones, The Ronnie Wood Story.

Yeah, he should know better. I'm guessing the publisher did the cover without Russell's knowledge, and without any particular knowledge...

That Hayward-book looks great. I wonder where the film footage comes from, and who actually took the pictures and filmed the films. Maybe Hayward is just a collector.

The book/DVD looks like a must-have. Thanks for posting about it.

The following is a hilarious Amazon review, written by someone named Mark Hayward (is he the author of the upcoming Stones: On Camera, Off Guard?) of Greenfield's "Exile on Main St: A Season in Hell etc"

To me, if this review serves as a peak into the author's style, I'm preordering!

Amazon review of Exile on Main St.: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones

Massive Disappointment, August 15, 2008

By Mark Hayward
I was excited to discover this, as like several others, I thought his previous Stones book was fantastic. But in the intervening years the author has become insufferably pompous, egotistical and cliché-ridden. He also appears to have fired his editor.

The author's habit of continually inserting song titles/lyrics and even bits of Shakespeare (without quotation marks, just to prove how effortless it all is) is as annoying as listening to some teenager say "like" every other word. For example: "Clowns to the left of him, jokers to the right, there he is, stuck in the middle with Keith", and as for the last line in the book, it deserves throwing against a wall. The constant uses of "Philip Michael Jagger" and also of the present tense are both increasingly irritating to the point of distraction. And the bit where he breaks off to slag off other Stones book authors is hilariously crass and at the same time pahetic.

Please allow me to quote a paragraph as a perfect illustration of the author's style; if you can get to the end of it without choking, this book is for you!

"Before any of this happens, Keith and Anita pull a Houdini. No pun intended, they take a powder. Like Bonnie & Clyde, they go on the lam. They skedaddle. They do the cow-cow boogie out the big front door of Nellcote...and then head as fast as they can for the airport in Nice where they board a plane and fly to safety. Like Elvis, Keith and Anita have now left the building. They have flown the coop."

Hey, Greenfield, you forgot "They are ex-residents, they have ceased to be..."

Thanks for the lead on the Beatles book, SwayStones. Sounds interesting, and would give an idea of what the Stones On Camera/Off Guard might be like.

I read a couple of articles about him last night. He is, as someone above suggested, a collector. He is a massive Hendrix fan, as well as Stones and Beatles.
