Cry To Me
(Bert Russell)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, May 11 - 12, 1965

Mick Jagger - lead vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar, harmony vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric guitar, harmonica
Ian Stewart - piano
Jack Nitzsche - organ

When your baby leaves you all alone
And nobody calls you on the phone
Doncha feel like crying, doncha feel like crying, like crying, like crying
C'mon baby, cry to me

When you're all alone in your lonely room
And there's nothing but the smell of her perfume
Doncha feel like crying, doncha feel like crying, like crying, like crying
C'mon baby, c'mon, cry to me

Nothing could be sadder than a glass of wine alone
Loneliness, loneliness, it’s just a waste of your time
But you don't ever, you don't ever have to walk alone, you see
So c'mon take my hand, c'mon walk with me

When you're waiting for a voice to come
In the night and there is no one
Doncha feel like crying, doncha feel like crying, like crying, like crying
C'mon baby, cry to me

C'mon baby, that's right, cry to me
Yes, I want you to come on baby
C'mon, c'mon and cry to me
I want you to c'mon baby
C'mon, c'mon and cry to me
Yeah, c'mon baby, c'mon, I want you to cry, cry, cry to me
Yeah, I want you to cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry
I want you to, come on, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry, cry
I want you to, come on, shed those tears, shed those tears for me

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Out Of Our Heads” LP
(London PS 429) US, July 30, 1965

I'm sorry to say but their take on this song is just horrible compared to Solomon Burke's defenitive version.

I love it! The Rolling Stones made a bunch of great covers their first years and this one is definately one of the greatest.
The song suits them 100 %. Great singing and great guitarplaying.

Yep, it's a good 'un

The Pretty Things rendition is rather good, too.

Despite a significant proportion of covers, the UK version of Out Of Our Heads was the album that, in my opinion, took the the Stones (especially Jagger), out of the mainstream and into the higher echelons of all-time greats.

Tracks such as Cry To Me, That's How Strong My Love and Have Mercy, seemed to be in a different class to the type of material being put out by their contemporaries.

Mick Jagger was no longer just a singer who jumper around on stage. He was also a brilliant vocalist.

Is it just me or does this song sound like he's singing it to another guy? The second verse is what makes it seem like it-"nothing but the smell of her perfume".Not that it matters I guess. Like Chuck said during "My Ding-a-ling"- "however you wanna live baby"!

best part of the tune is the high-lonesome b/u vox toward the end - from keef, i presume....

Solomon Burke, and the Pretty Things, and even a version by Duffy on YouTube (I don't recommend Duffy's!) all use that same gentle rhythm that is familiar from other hits of the time like Spanish Harlem and Stand By Me, and in all of them the instrumentation is basically a simple backing for the singer(s).

The Stones do something different: the rhythm is harder, and the guitars aren't just a backing track: there's almost a duet with Mick's (brilliant) vocal. It's not just a copy, it's good in its own right.

Freddie Scott cut a fine version of Cry To Me for the Shout label in 1967
Then followed it up later in the same year with Am I Grooving You .....

Along with Down Home Girl, Cry to Me is my favorite of the early Stones covers.

Pure teen angst. Great screaming by Jagger.

A little like the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds cover of I Put a Spell on You in spirit.

And worth having a listen to Betty Harris' take of Cry To Me on Jubilee Records

Cut in 1963 a year after Solomon's version and once again produced
by Bert Berns it runs at a much lower geared pace but is a classic piece of Deep Soul.....

Freddie's version can be heard at this page: http://www.playlist.com/searchbeta/tracks#freddi%20scott%20cry%20to%20me

Rockman, your music library must be huge and full of the best music.

And I noticed the Stones version sounds just like Betty's version. I always thought they were doing a cover of Burke's version.

Yes, I think the same thing.

But is it usual to call his friend "baby"?

the concept (above) that it was Betty Harris's rendition they were basing this on makes it allllll clear:
the song is written for a chick to sing. and Mick Jagger kept it that way, just because he is Mick Jagger :E

Yeah, no "baby" in the pretty thing rendition

Strange thing is that Solomon Burke recorded it 1962 ... Some time after
Burke introduced Betty Harris to Berns who then recut Cry To Me with her in 1963 ......

Bert Berns ...........

The highly talented Bert Berns wrote some cool stuff over the years....
Twist & Shout...Here Comes The Night .... A Little Bit Of Soap ....Piece Of My Heart...Baby Let Me take You Home .....

Also produced Freddie Scotts ... Cry To Me & Am I Grooving You .....

Sadly Berns passed away in 1967 from a fatal heart attack .......
