i really dont like the direction the stones are taking.

if the stones replace charlie, are they then going to replace keith at a later date, then mick aswell.

the stones arent a bloody football team, they simply cannot replace personel and still call themeselves by the same name.

they got away with it when they replaced brian and then replaced mick taylor, but only 1 of the origonal positions had been changed the other 4 remained constant till the early 90,s.

if charlie is replaced the stones will look a shambles because only 2 of the origonal members will remain.

the stones need to quit altogether if charlie, mick or keith quit.

This rumour mongering bloke Paul Cashmere ruined a lot of peoples day yesterday and in the process shot himself in the foot and ruined the credibility of the undercover.au website.

He clearly underestimated the power of the global internet by spreading badly sourced gossip or maybe evan the voices in his own head - what a prat.

Well, what else can he do?

1) Set himself on fire

2) Stick 2 pencils up his nose, wear his Y fronts over his head and call the doc.

3) Stick to his pathetic story and hope.

Yes, I know what you mean. If he did write the article in good faith, it does continue to raise questions about the source of his information. Maybe I'm just falling into the "no smoke without fire" trap.

My father was a journalist for over 25 years and he never made up a story. Not once.

Me too. It should be remembered that:

1) The Stones PR machine has never been above misleading fans

2) When Bill quit it was (according to his book) many many months before the Stones publically acknowledged the fact. And, that was only after Bill broke the news on a television interview.

Just saying.....

Deathgod didn't start the rumour, did he? A website broke the news from what they considered a reliable source, and Deathgod pointed us to that site. If the news had been true, it would have been terrible news, but apart from that, no harm done as I see it.
The day will come that these kind of news are reality, and I'm trusting this forum to bring them to me, as well as the good news too, of course.

Maybe 'the source' in his article misinterpreted what was said at a recent band meeting? Could it be that Charlie has said, 'THIS will be the last tour'?

Few more thoughts about the subject.

We could also ask: can Charlie even quit 'just like that'? Didn't the Stones just made a record deal with Universal, and there was also some speculation of a new album. Or is this right info - I never got that business clear (was it just the catalog deal?). Obviously Charlie signed that, too.

If we compare the situation into that of Bill leaving he did it, or it was realized, when they were making their deal with Virgin - Bill didn't sign the contract, and that was it.

According to Keith, Bill had already said after Urban Jungle tour that he is leaving, and according to timeisonourside.com info Bill announced the departure in mid-January 1991 in their business meeting, but they decided to keep it quite (out of official statements) because there were no important Stones activities in near future. After this meeting, Bill would perform only one Stones task: shooting for the video of "Sex Drive" in Twickenham, London (May 21-22, 1991).

The Stones signed the new deal with Virgin in November, 1991. There was Bill's name on contract, but he never sign it. This was noted in the press too. STILL, a year later, November 1992, Mick and Charlie visited Bill to "give him the last chance to change his mind and stay in the band" (Wyman, ROLLING WITH THE STONES, p. 497). He didn't took the bite, and finally, in January 1993 Bill announced of him leaving the Stones in "London Tonight" tv show.

Over-all, Bill's departure took about two years before it was finally accomplished - the rest just didn't seem to accept it. But already, in beginning of 1991, after his announcement in their business meeting, Bill writes "rumours began appearing in the press about my leaving the Stones and this time they were correct".

How did the others reacted to the rumours during this two years period? Let's have a look:

Keith Richards (March 1991): Is Bill still a Stone?
"As far as the rest of us are concerned, he's still in the band. We'll know in a year, when we start getting back together."

Keith Richards (November 1991): Is Bill still a Stone?
"With Bill, you can't tell. I'm going to wait until I get in the studio and see if he's there or not. I hope he is."

Mick Jagger (December 1991): Is Bill out of the Stones?
"It's a terrible thing. God, I don't know how I'm going to live with it. I think Bill's kind of had enough of it all, really. I mean, I don't know, he seemed all right on the tour, but I guess he just doesn't want to do any more. He's got enough money, and I suppose he feels he's done it. We haven't really talked it through, but I don't think I'd be out of order by saying that I doubt we would actually get somone new in the band who would be a permanent Rolling Stone. We'll go out on the tour and make a record with a bass player and then we'll see how that works over a two-year period."

Keith Richards (September 1992): Hoping for Bill to be in the picture
"I just hope he's there to follow me the next time around. Which leads us to that question, right? Whether or not he's in the band is up to him. As far as I'm concerned, there's no way I want to change that lineup, unless he's absolutely adamant. I have my spies out. I talk to his ex-old-ladies, who can see him. Some people tell me he means it, and then I speak to some of his older friends who have a feeling he'll be there. So I'm getting these two messages. And Bill is not the guy... We don't talk on the phone, because he's too guarded and I'm too pointed. I have to see his eyes to know. It was a spin on my head when I discovered he just doesn't like flying anymore. Hell, you can't think of everything. There's all kinds of angles and possibilities on this thing with Bill, but I don't want to change this lineup unless I really got to. And he's the only one that can make me have to."

Mick Jagger (December 1992): A new bass player for the Rolling Stones
"We don't (need a permanent bass player). We want someone for the next project, which will be making an album and going on a tour, probably. After that, I'm not guaranteeing he's going to work for the next 25 years. (laughs) More like the next two years. The resumes are definitely coming now. It's going to be quite difficult 'cause how do you know? They're all going to be good people and it's not a position which requires the finest technical brilliance. You have to play, but playing bass with the Rolling Stones is not a virtuoso show. So it's going to be kind of hard, but ultimately I think it will result in a much more kicking rhythm section. But it will be different and it won't be easy to replace someone who's been playing in the rhythm section with Charlie and Keith for a very long time. I'm not underestimating Bill nor underestimating the fact that it's going to be slightly different. But I think you've got to make a virtue out of these things."

(All the quotes from timeisonourside.com)

I think it is difficult to draw any analogies to Charlie case now (if there is any case at all?). But what can be learned from the 'Bill case' is that even though one clearly says that "I'm out", the rest will not accept that very easily...

In addition, if you 'banned' people for posting a 'rumour' that turned out to be incorrect, you'd quickly have no one left on any board. Even the people who run it. People do get info wrong despite acting in good faith. It happens.

blame deathgod for posting the article is, well, stupid
but i would not be so angry with the australian guy too.
I think you can only blame him for not trying...charlie or official source for a confirm/denial
looks like he was turned down by his own "solid source"
certainly this was a huge hit at the website's credibility
