The main feature of the Criterion disc is not in widescreen so maybe this is a brand new transfer.

!!

I doubt if the very careful people at Criterion would have released it in anything but the original format. Since it was shot with hand-held cameras, I'm guessing the film image was always a smaller ratio...so what you see now is what you get.

Unless they make it a "widescreen" film by cropping the top and bottom. This was actually done to Gone With The Wind when it was re-released for theaters in the '60's.

Are these new songs going to be edited into the main feature?

If memory serves, the extra songs on the region 1 version were low-quality extras with portions of sound missing.

Pretty sure the new songs will form part of the extras - just as the other 3 additions were last time round.

Like other songs featured in the movie, these will be the original performances WITHOUT ANY OVERDUBS.

Memory does not serve -- the audio was complete but parts of the footage was missing.

Is this new DVD worth it ?....you be the judge...as I own & just reviewed my Criterion copy & read what is being released by Warner Home video...buy this ONLY if you don't own the Criterion copy...unless you MUST have the 3 extra tracks from MSG & the extended KSAN broadcast...which to me is just not worth it...but for completists, I'm sure there is no argument...the picture & audio quality cannot be any better than the Criterion version, that's for sure....peter

Its not a Criterion release. Its a Warner Home Video release - on widescreen

The full list of bonus material is (according to the review)

Audio Commentary by the directors and collaborator Stanley Goldstein

40-page booklet

1969 KSAN Radio broadcast of Altamont wrap-up

backstage outtakes of the Stones at Madison Square Garden

songs : 'Sympathy For The Devil', 'Stray Cat Blues' and 'Live With Me'

Trailers

UK release date : 21/9/09

Both amazon.co.uk and play.com now list these special features besides a 36 page booklet:

Special Features
• Audio commentary by directors Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin, and collaborator Stanley Goldstein
• 1969 KSAN Radio broadcast of Altamont wrap-up (with excerpts from then-DJ Stefan Ponek)
• Backstage outtakes of the Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden in New York City
• Trailers

So no mention of the 3 extra songs. Did they just copy the features of the 2000 Criterion release out of laziness? I'm gonna wait pre-ordering for a while...

But since this new version will be a PAL disc, I hope it won´t be running 4% fast with increased soundtrack pitch (-> see also: European Shine A Light DVDs).

Hope so, too. These European DVDs with their increased soundtrack speed are a drag, really. Shine A Light, Rattle & Hum and many more (also non-music movies) are unlistenable...(feel free to make an anti-U2- or anti-SAL comment now...;-) )

The Mojo magazine review on this thread [www.iorr.org] states emphatically that there are 6 extra tracks(including the 3 from the Criterion edition).Dont blame you for waitng to see though, that's what i'm going to do.

So much for the three new tracks!!

I was all excited to get my hands on a freebie copy last night from the Madame JoJo's release party, got home and immediately put the disc in the machine to check out dvd footage of the ultimate version of SFTD + Live With Me & Stray Cat Blues only to find none of these tracks are on the disc!!!!
No, it's just the same old extras as the Criterion release. So where did this misinformation spring from?

Oh well, at least I didn't shell out dosh to find this out. BEWARE anyone else excited by the mythical tracks on this thread!

Well that saves me a tenner then

Not sure why the Mojo review mentions the extra tracks, unless the guy reviewed the dvd without seeing it,and assumed the extra songs were on there

here's where Rock Man posted the Mojo review for us: [www.iorr.org]
i'm hopeful that the review is righter than amazon.co.uk, who may well have merely copy-and-pasted
the description and reviews of the Criterion release.

oops, sorry: just saw Tseverin's post. can someone phone Mojo and ask them a very stern wtf, please and thank you?
