Hello,
Not the world's biggest fan by any stretch but last night's U2 show in drizzly old Glasgow was one of the most enjoyable shows that I've been at for a while.
This was due in part to the decision to buy Red Zone auction tickets, but it was worth it to be able to swan in 20 minutes before kick-off and still have bags of room to wander close to the stage.
What else made for such a great time?Well,a capacity crowd who loved letting the band know how much they valued them,a sound system as good as you'll ever hear,a band who really were playing well and enjoying it all,and just the most extraordinary stage you'll ever see.
Much has been made of The Claw set-up and I was a bit dubious about the whole exercise until I walked into the stadium:it's only then that you get it...wow!This was one stage concept that definitely wasn't knocked-up on the back of a fag packet just before closing-time.
As fas as the set-list goes,I knew maybe 2/3 rds of their songs and was pleased with how much more oooomph their faster numbers like 'Vertigo' had:in fact,I enjoyed hearing their songs live quite a bit more than the studio originals.
Bono gets quite a shoeing from folks for his hectoring from the stage on various subjects, but last night he kept it to a minimum with the Burmese lady,Aung San Suu Kyi,the benficiary of Mr. Hewson's thoughts and words. To be fair to the U2 man,he spoke no more than Bruce might, for example:I wonder if someone reminded him that the people have paid to be entertained foremost?
Anyway, the wee man had the balance pretty much right. The two hours literally flew by,and by the time we were on the M74 caning it home,Air 360 had landed back in London with Lance Armstrong onboard, predicting that it was gonna be a long night.
Well,well,well...looks like there were two great cyclists in Glasgow yesterday,heh-heh!

Cheers,
Si.
