Cool, Calm & Collected
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, August 3 - 11, 1966 and
Pye Studios & Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, November 8 - 26, 1966

Mick Jagger - vocals, harmonica
Keith Richards - electric guitar, kazoo
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric dulcimer
Ian Stewart - piano

Well, she's very wealthy it's true
So in that she is one up on you
She's dressed all in red, white and blue
And she always knows more than you do

She's so affected, cool, calm, collected

She knows who to smile to today
She has just been brought up in that way
She knows all the right games to play
And she always just knows what to say

She's well respected, cool, calm, collected

She's so affected, cool, calm, collected

In public the strain's heard to bear
She exudes such a confident air
But behind she is not without care
But she sweeps it right under her hair

She's well respected, cool, calm, collected

She seems to glow brilliantly white
And her hair seems to shine in the night
With her feet unbelievably light
And her teeth ready, sharpened to bite

She's so respected, cool, calm, collected

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Between The Buttons” LP
(Decca SKL 4852) UK, January 20, 1967

There's no banjo on this song.
It's Brian on the electric dulcimer.

It's not one of my favorits, but it's a funny song !
I never used that track when I made cassettes of "the best of"Stones songs to give away to friends in the old days.

It's fun just like many other songs on BTB. But it's also a quite obvious attempt at emulating the Kinks, and as such a bit...ugh...shallow.

Very odd song this one. Not sure what inspired it. It's got a kind of Noel Coward meets vaudeville thing going on. The Kinks were also getting into this very English influence..their songs Afternoon Tea and End Of The Season on the same year's Something Else By The Kinks spring to mind.

the roaring 20ies and charleston comes to mind.

Yup, that's definitely Brian playing his electric Dulcimer aka Vox Bijou. thumbs up

It was a poor track I thought 1967...still don't care too much for it..the song is very Spike Jones with that rushing ending...

For many years, I actually loved this track, but the passing of time has not been very kind to either the arrangement or the lyrics of this and several others from the Between The Buttons album.

By adopting a kind of quintessential tired-old-England stance to the likes of this and Something Happened To Me Yesterday, I wonder perhaps if they were trying to acheive something along the lines of what the Kinks were doing at that particular time.

I say that because with a slightly slower arrangement, I think Ray Davies could actually have done a better job with this song.

between the buttons was always a seriously underrated album.

i have never understood why, did it not fit the stones image, to me its the stones ability to change that defines them.

Not very good...

It´s this and Something Happened To Me Yesterday that makes "Between The Buttons" a weaker album than it could have been.
In their place, add Let´s Spend The Night Together/Ruby Tuesday to the UK album and it´s much better!

I love Between the Buttons it is very different and yeah they copped a little of what the Kinks were doing but that is one of the great things about the Stones they take something and make it there own.

With all this backlash against this song and "Something Happened to Me Yesterday" is it no wonder why many of this album's material had not been played live at any Stones concert?

Also ... was this album not well-received because their relationship with producer Andrew Oldham was falling apart, combined with the jail sentences to the Stones' three chief members?

This, like the rest of BTB, is kind of dated sounding, but I think it's just a product of the times. The musical landscape was changing year by year, so with this album they, like the Kinks and Beatles, were in their mid/late-60s English style period. I like the lyrics of CCC, quite clever and almost poetic. Ok, the kazoo is a bit annoying, it could have been a sax instead..or maybe Jones could have done a solo on his Vox instrument.

I actually love BTB and have recently been getting into it again. The songs are very musical and Mick sings with a lot of conviction (especially Complicated). The mix of BTB is good and the instruments sound great.

By the way, Connection has been played live by both the Stones and solo Keith.

Doesn't Brian play harmonica as well? So, harmonica, kazoo and Vox Bijou?

Harmonica is usually credited to Mick on this, but who knows for sure? (Mick?winking smiley)
Kazoo could also be Keith - I think somewhere Mick said that.

I like it because its different...It was fun and very up beat type album..CC&C is just a fun "old fashion" type song and i think the stones added anything they could think of to make it sound that way. Any thing they could find in the studio..ha.
Anyway Stonestod said it best...FUN!

The Stones took the vaudeville-act too far on this one, imo. I really like SHTMY, though. My problem with the BTB-album as a whole is the generally poor playing. Some gems in there, though smiling smiley

CCC is an interesting curio in the Stones collection, too many songs like that and it would be too much. but BTB is a fun listen, very spring-like, at least the US version is. definitely their most anglo-pop. CCC typifies their sound at the time, but also a band in a phase of trying on different styles, not quite arriving at their sound, yet also not afraid to take risks and actually be silly. i like the zaniness of the kazoo and sped up finish.

A kazoo??!! Umm, it's only the single most annoying musical instrument ever created, right? This track doesn't make it any more palatable.

If this type of novelty song is your cup of (English) tea, my friend, we must agree to disagree.

Someone on a Brian Jones forum unearthed an old interview with Mick in which he said he played harmonica, Keith the kazoo on this track.

So Brian' contribution was his cool electric dulcimer/Vox bijou part.
