Ah, Marlene from 'Die Blaue Engel" circa 1930. She was the Madonna of here day and did everything that Madonna has done and them some. Thanks for the pic Terry!
She made and English version "Die Blaue Engel" in America as "The Blue Angel" also in 1930. As far as I know, "Die Blaue Engel" was her last German film and yes she did speak out against @#$%& and was even a consort, however briefly, of Jumpin' Jim Gavin during the war. But then, Marlene was not a monogamist. Nice photo montage by the way Terry!Quote
timbernardisI believe that was the one film she did in Germany before taking off permanently for Hollywood, correct me if I am wrong.Quote

Marlene Dietrich In Germany
Rear view of actress Marlene Dietrich, 40, in slinky sequined evening gown, posing seductively w. foot on chair as she exhibits her famous shapely leg as comedian Freddie Lightner looks on, during USO show for US servicemen.
Location: Germany

rocky - r u sure about that date and location as at that time, the western Allies had not really pushed into Germany or it was very early on in terms of any Allied presence on German soil. Give them two months and it was nearly over.
just found this quickly which may not be the definitive source nor the total picture, dont know...
On March 22, with a bright moon lighting the late-night sky, elements of the U.S. XII Corps' 5th Infantry Division began the Third Army's Rhine crossing (back to Patton now as this was his Army).
Do u have a specific location in Germany for that foto?

Ah, thanks for the correction. I was aware that she had made a few films in Germany before coming to America but I had only seen the "Die Laue Engel" I have a great CD of Marlene singing songs from "Die Blaue Engel" all in German and recorded circa 1930. She really sang with enthusiasm and youthful joie de vivre then. As to Emil Jannings, his performance was indeed great and I have seen him is few German silents, my favorite being "Faust, Eine deutsche Volkssage" from 1926. Great stuff!Quote

No. It was made concurrently by Von Sternberg in Germany. It was her breakthrough role that made her an international star, but she had made many films before that.
Emil Jannings performance in that film as the professor who falls for her just slays. He was a great actor.
