Child Of The Moon
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, March 17 - 29, 1968

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - saxophone
Nicky Hopkins - piano, organ
Rocky Dijon - percussion
Jimmy Miller - backing vocals

The wind blows rain into my face
The sun glows at the end of the highway
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Oh, child of the moon, give me a wide-awake, crescent-shaped smile

She shivers by the light she is hidden
She flickers like a lamp lady vision
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Child of the moon, give me a wide-awake, crescent-shaped smile

The first car on the foggy road riding
The last star for my lady is pining
Oh, child of the moon, bid the sun arise
Oh, child of the moon, give me a misty day, pearly gray
Silver, silky faced, wide-awake crescent-shaped smile

Produced by Jimmy Miller

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Jumpin’ Jack Flash / Child Of The Moon” 7” single
(Decca F 12782) UK, May 24, 1968

Great track! Still has the hippy vibe to it, but with that edge of being an outsider...and yeah what is he yelling!!?

I Love this song.

Has anyone else heard the slightest resemblence to this track & Under The Radar?

Something about the way Mick draws out & sings the lines in both songs.

Can't exactly place it, but to me they are similar sounding.

Just my first impressions after I first heard Under The Radar.

To this day I can still hear some similarities with Child Of The Moon & UTR.

I love both songs equally, so similar or not, they are both great songs to listen to.

Yes, I hear it too - in 40 years of songwriting it's inevitable that the same basic ideas will come round again - but resulting in two very different songs.

Thanks Green Lady - that is perfectly put to how I would wish to explain the two songs after 40 years between the two. "Similar but Very Different".

In my view, and hopefully some of the guitar experts can chime in on this, it was the first song Keith set in open G tuning...it sure sounds like it. And the strumming of the chord (especially at the beginning) seems like a precurser to JJF.

Also, this would have been a great b-stage song at open-air shows...

Can't recall the exact details but as I recall it is the first tune Keith used open-G on.

I am not positive but I hear open D or dropped D tuning.I always loved that song, ever since getting the singles collection in 1989.

don't think it's open G... maybe open D? It's a more drony sound than open G normally produces.

One of my favorites. Kind of a Velvet Underground-y sound; that's probably why. Great atmosphere, lyrics, incidentals (the shouting at the beginning!).

yeah - before ABB was released early listeners were discussing a song (UTR) that was said to be reminiscient of this one....grandchild of the moon, as it were....

The guitars are tuned to open D.

There's no acoustic Rene, but perhaps thats a nod to the earlier attempts from 1967 as heard on the Satanic Sessions box sets?

It sounds like they have used the inbuilt distortion on the Vox Foundation Bass amplifier for the bass.

yup. we always used to do it it in D, and that guitar player knew his stuff (and let us all know it all the time, miserable bastid he was!). He may have used a drop-D tuning to get the fuzz-bass effect, dunno.

But yeah- a personel fave of mine; just gorgeous: ethereal but stark, tuneful and whimsical, but droning and austere (good Velvets call, cc).

They shouda put it on Beggars Banquet, along with it's kinda cool but cheesey b-side Chompin' Jack's Flask, or whatever it was called- woulda made a perfect album even more ...erm...perfecter!

Thanks for the no acoustic guitar info, His Majesty.
Indeed a nod to the earlier Satanic Sessions box attemps, thought they kept it in for the final release, but after listening to it again it looks like there's only a electric guitar indeed.

Do you know what actually is being said I could never make it out?
