OT: "THE CLAW" - U2 introduce centerpiece of Their New "In The Round" Stadium Stage
Posted by: HelterSkelter ()

Called the 4 LEGGED MONSTER - a gigantic structure with a stunningly massive amount of speakers spread through out it's entire structure to completely cover - as far as STADIUM sound goes - all the 4 sides equally for the IN-THE-ROUND Stadium shows on the new U2 "360 Degrees Tour". The first leg of the USA portion of the tour begins Sept. 12, 2009 in Chicago with the Official Opening Night of the tour happening in BARCELONA on June 30th, 2009.

Due to this nasty World Wide financial crisis (2009 - ????) the ticket prices will begin at a very reasonable $30.00 per seat. 120 trucks will cart around the biggest rock stage ever built. The 164 foot tall stage, twice as tall as the ROLLING STONES "Bigger Bang" Tour Stage, "THE CLAW" also contains 72 Sub Woofers for all you lovers of the Deep Bass Funk BODY-POUND out there smiling smiley . The band has assured the public through it's official web-site "Not to worry, all amps and volume controls on THE CLAW will be turned up to "11" - yes, it is getting a bit "Spinal Tapish" out there. This is the most expensive tour the band has ever gone on/put together.

PLEASE LEAVE YOUR THOUGHTS, OPINIONS, AND ARE YOU PLANNING TO GO ? (I personally don't think the new album is all that great - last few were much better IMHO)

.

I wonder if this is going to spur Jagger on to get a tour together. He will not be able to stand it that the Stones don't have their own "Claw", and that U2 has dwarfed their B2B stage.

Was the Bigger Bang stage bigger than...Bridges? For some reason I always thought the Bridges stage was the biggest ever.

"The ticket prices will begin at $30.00." Where? In the end zone nosebleed section? Don't forget the parking fees, which can range from 20-50 dollars.

Helter, are you going to the Rose Bowl show?

BTW, How long of a set are they playing these days? (I haven't seen the in about 20 years.)

dcba, it it really gigantic. The stage is in the middle. Then above the stage are huge video screens, basically in a circle. Visible from 360 degrees. The picture like a huge tent above all that with a big axis type pole in the middle and four converging supporting beams. HANGING from way up there are clusters of PA speakers; arranged like the video screens, facing to all aeras of the audience. Now these are WAY up there. I think the structure is higher than the stadiums.
It looks like there is going to be one hell of a delay for the band to contend with.

Certainly if it doesn't work they could just go back to the usual stage on one end...

PopMart had it in MONO...

hi everyone.... I got most of this info from the new ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE (the one with the almost porn style cover - 2 girls lickin' up a strangely shaped ice cream cone).... I'm a very liberal guy but I do find the new cover having NOTHING to do with ROLLING STONE'S usual content... believe it's a very cheap way to increase sales). It came this morning in the post. I'm not planning on going to the show and the stage - THE CLAW - sounds way over the top (there is a diagram or 2).... what's next? Concerts on the moon? Obviously this was all planned before the Financial Crisis (basically started around September 16th officially) or they would have planned a very different show, I'm sure of it. I personally wish U2 had gone in a totally different direction with this new album. To me, it should have been a double (at least 30 songs) with just tons a variety. I know they recorded a lot with Rick Rubin than dumped it all....where are the acoustic numbers? Could have been U2's WHITE ALBUM but instead sounds more like a lost album to me.... I'm sure the show will be interesting, put me down for a deluxe version DVD......

That sounds about right. If it doesn't work very well they can flip it over and turn it into a "U2 Cruise Ship" for the Summer Holidays - just would need a few spot welds and some casual indoor/outdoor furniture from IKEA for the deck......

I agree with you Helter. I am no big U2 fan anymore. I realized this time around, when I caught them one night on Letterman that they are just irrelevant. Who really cares what they do? It will be big and passionate and melodic. Bono will breathe hard and Edge will sing backups. Really professional and great and all..but no surprise. And that is the IMO the downfall. I think Helter is right - a big old sprawling piece of work; riddled with defects and misfires. And some Rubin strokes in there. That Lanois - Eno- Edge sound is Muzak by now.

OH boy, I hate to use quotes that others have said that now apply 100% to themselves BUT.....

I think Bono and the boys are "Stuck in a Moment They Can't Get Out Of"

AND, instead of doing this gigantic tour they should have went away for awhile to "Reinvent Themselves"..... Worked like a charm last time they did something like that and... this new album could have been so much more.....

Yeah Palace Revolution...... Letterman didn't really work to well did it? A lazy solution to a lot of lazy idea's floating around.....

Isn't it still a little early to be making such judgments? How long did it take for A Bigger Bang to start sucking on the jugular or turning into an Angie or for the Stones to go back to zero or to be 2000 light years from home after ABB came out?

Retards like me find Google is a blessing winking smiley

[scatterolight.blogspot.com]

And the RS article answers the obvious question : inflated stage production + low (or "low"?) ticket prices = need to find a sponsor...

Maybe..... GM and/or CITI BANK can sponsor the U2 Tour with a "loan" from the US Government....

I did some Google surfing, check this out....

TAJ MAHAL, Agra, INDIA - 213 Feet Tall

THE CLAW, on the move, STADIUM to STADIUM - 164 Feet Tall

ST. PETER'S BASILICA DOME, Rome/Vatican City - 138 Feet in Diameter

US CAPITOL DOME, Washington D.C. - 96 Feet in Diameter

OK, THE CLAW does seem to be on the big side - "Beware of Little Men With Big Idea's" .....Good timing by Bono, Edger, and the other Dudes - 120 Trucks for Stage Movement - THINKIN' GREEN !!!!! - ALRIGHT !!!

You can see an interesting computerized image of the stage on U2.com. It does not convey the size of this thing, though. When I first saw it I thought it looked simpler, more basic... but from the above report it seems I am wrong! My wife and I will go if I can get us the lower priced tickets, but I don't think I'll be spending $100+ on another stadium show for anybody anytime soon. From what I hear, the U2 album is selling well, considering album sales are way down for everybody. The whole massive stadium stage concept is a bit puzzling to me, though, considering PopMart was a near miss, and the big success of their arena tours following the last two albums. I'm really not sure why they are still doing stadiums. I look forward to the new issue of RS... mine has not arrived yet.

Either you like U2 or you don't. Simple as that. Personally I can't wait to catch them twice in Gothenburg this summer.

Having already reached adulthood by the time their first album was released, I didn't "grow up" with this music and have no strong connection to it. But it sounds like it would be fun to see them. I might go.

Any Get Smart fans out there?

The reason I ask is, every time I see this header on the list, I think of an episode where he faces an Asian Fu Manchu-type KAOS mastermind--with a steel hook instead of a hand--who is known as "The Claw."

When the two finally come faces to face, he points his hook at Max and says, "Do you know what they call me??"

Max thinks and says, "Lefty?"

"No! (and with great drama and fanfare he announces) The Craw!!"

"The....Craw ??"

"NO! Not "The Craw".... The CRAW!!"

The last U2 songs I loved were "The Unforgettable Fire" & the one The Edge sung on with a robotic voice... Guess I won't go! winking smiley
