Bye Bye Johnny
(Chuck Berry)

Decca Studios, West Hamstead, London, UK, August 8, 1963

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric guitar, backing vocals

Well, she drew out all her money at the Southern Trust
And put her little boy aboard a Greyhound bus
Leaving Lousiana for the golden West
Down came the tears from her happiness
Her own little son named Johnny B Goode
Was gonna make some motion pictures out in Hollywood

Hollering bye bye bye bye
Now bye bye bye bye
Bye bye Johnny, bye bye Johnny B Goode

Well, she remembered taking money earned from gathering crops
And buying Johnny's guitar at a broker’s shop
As long as he could play it by the railroad side
And wouldn't get in trouble, she'd be satisfied
But she never thought there'd ever come a day like this
When she would have to give her son a goodbye kiss

Hollering bye bye bye bye
Now bye bye bye bye
Bye bye Johnny, bye bye Johnny B Goode, yeah

Well, she finally got the letter she was dreaming of
Johnny wrote and told her he had fell in love
As soon as he was married he would bring her back
And build a mansion for her by the railroad tracks
And everytime they heard the locomotive roar
They'd be a-standing, a-waving in the kitchen door

Hollering bye bye bye bye
Now bye bye bye bye
Bye bye Johnny, bye bye Johnny B Goode

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “The Rolling Stones” EP
(Decca DFE 8560) UK, January 17, 1964

The bass lines on this track are amazing, Bill in full flow.
Raw but muddy production - God knows who was in charge of the knobs and buttons in those days, Eric Easton?

The boys could not go wrong with this one. One of their most energetic Chuck Berry renditions
ever. I like the 1972 versions, like this one from Fort Worth:

Great track! Like the studio version, but wow, the live versions from '72 are amazing. And I agree, the Fort Worth version is one of my favs! Love it on Ladies and Gentlemen!!!

I always liked BBJ better than Johnny B. Goode.

1972 live, one of better moments in Keith/Mick playing history.

this one's always special for some reason. The studio cut sounds different from any other track; the guitar sound is very distinctive.

An all Chuck Berry covers album by the Stones would be a great thing.

They did.....

"And indeed the Rolling Stones have complete Chuck Berry tribute albums. An official one named "Rolling Berry's" (London L20P-1126, 1983) was released only in Japan and contains eight Berry covers (You Can't Catch Me / Around And Around / Carol / Bye Bye Johnny / I'm Talking About You / Come On / Carol -Live / Little Queenie -Live) plus four Berry-related songs (Route 66 / Confessin' The Blues / Down The Road A Piece / Route 66 -Live). A bootleg CD named Rolling Stones play Chuck Berry (no label, 2005) contains a collection of even 20 Berry-related recordings ranging from a pre-Stones 1962 recording of Beautiful Delilah to Keith Richard's version of Run Rudolph Run. In addition the CD comes with four versions of Down The Road Apiece by Bradley/McKinley/Stack, Amos Milburn, Chuck Berry and the Rolling Stones plus two unrelated bonus tracks."

It's on an Album called Around and Around - a German release?

Not sure on which other vinyls you can find it. The first E.P.?

It's just a cover tune. No one plays Chuck Berry like Chuck Berry.
Funnily, Keith is worshipped for his covering of Chuck, and for some, his Berry-ing is the definitive sound of the band. I've never prescribed to that. I've heard other groups do much more interesting thing with Berry's songs.

Generally speaking I think classic Keith dirtied up the Berry riffs and made them sexy. In his prime on stage he structured the songs with a control that I rarely heard Berry exhibit. With Taylor on BBJ Berry is played with a sophistication Berry could only dream about. The Vancouver '72 version is interesting as Taylor takes the leads. There is hardly a poor version in '72, but IMO the MSG birthday show is the definitive performance. But why quibble?

The version at the last MSG '72 show remains my favorite, but the version at Charlotte in '72 does seem to knock the earth off its axis a bit.

While I would generally agree that no one plays Berry like Berry, this tune done in '72 does not make me long for the original.

Oh, I'm not quibbling. I do like BBJ, more so in '72.
I think it's because, well, when I was a kid the 2 Berry covers on GYYYO were the low points on the record for me.

Here is the same clip.....but I recorded some little riffs over it a couple of years ago.......just for fun, but I don't think it sounds too bad......played on my 59 Junior.

If you hadn't heard/seen the original, would know the riffs were added 33 years after....I love the middle of the solo at 1:38 where Keith and I hit it together......

Hope you Guy's like it...........

oops, sorry René!... well, there's nothing too bad, just a few phrases that could be more natural, like:

Well, she drew out all her money at the Southern Trust
And put her little boy aboard a Greyhound bus.
Leaving Lou-siana for the golden West,
Down came the tears from her happiness.
Her own little son named Johnny B. Goode
Was gonna make some motion pictures out in Hollywood

Hollering bye bye bye bye!
Now bye bye bye bye!
Bye bye Johnny, bye bye Johnny B. Goode!

Well, she remembered taking money earned from gathering crops
And buying Johnny's guitar at a broker's shop.
As long as he would play it by the railroad side
And wouldn't get in trouble, she'd be satisfied
But she never thought there'd ever come a day like this,
When she would have to give her son a goodbye kiss.

Hollering bye bye bye bye!
Now bye bye bye bye!
Bye bye Johnny, bye bye Johnny B. Goode!

Well, she finally got the letter she was dreaming of.
Johnny wrote and told her he had fell in love.
As soon as he was married he would bring her back
And build a mansion for her by the railroad tracks.
And everytime they heard the locomotive roar
They'd be a-standing, a-waving in the kitchen door

Hollering bye bye bye bye!
Now bye bye bye bye!
Bye bye Johnny, bye bye Johnny B. Goode!

Not bad playing Fingers but between you, Keith and Mick it sounds a bit cluttered. Have you tried recording your own version, backing track and all?
