By the way, Chris Spedding's interview with Keith is interesting.

There's a lot of 'em, but today (and most days), it's this guy:

As the Wolf once said to Muddy, after Muddy mistreated Hubert, "I'll kill you over him."

Ghost, who was Al Green's guitarist on those early 70's classics? Nice touch.

My top six at this writing are:

Keith Richards
Steve Hunter
Dick Wagner
J Geils
Jim Thackery (Nighthawks -not sure if he is alive)
Robert Cray (Strong Persuader album is solid evidence)

I think it was one of the Hodges brothers - let me do some quick investigating, be right back.

EDIT:
Yeah, Elmo - "Teenie" Hodges. That whole Hi house band was so great, such a distinctive sound and style. All of the work they did with Al Green aside, the records the cut on Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson, and OV Wright (among others) are just fantastic.

Thanks, Ghost, I figured you'd know.

Such tasteful, just right playing. The art of playing for the song's sake, not individual glory - a lost art.

No problem, Elmo...and yeah, "tasteful" is the operative word here. Playing for the song's sake/in the song's service, to be sure. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

Yep, Al Green and his band were something. Saw him in Memphis and LA back in the day. Would love to see him again. John Lennon was a huge fan of Al and the band.

Hitting a Georgia dirt road with a cold beer and an Al Green CD. Beautiful spring day here - about 75.

That sounds like a hell of a plan for a Friday afternoon. A beautiful thing.

oh, yeah, jimmy is very much alive and well - he left the nighthawks two decades ago, but still plays the circuit and records regularly with his own band. one of the best guitarists i've ever seen.

cray is another personal fave...it's not easy to steal a show away from god, but he did that on tour with clapton...

The Nighthawks use to play Raleigh and Greenville frequently in the late 70s and early 80s. Of course they were out of the DC area and probably hit the rock clubs in Virginia as well. They were awesome. In a previous thread there was talk about sex at concerts. Not a good idea. Now the Rock club scene was the place to pick up and party the night away. Those were definitely different times.

got to see them play a handful of times while jimmy was still in the act. just an amazing tightly-knit foursome. still listen to many of the surviving live recordings from that era. studio-wise, they weren't as impressive...a couple of pretty good albums. never made the bigtime like many expected.

Just noting that the above mentioned Teenie Hodges did NOT play on "Georgia Boy" which is from Al Green's first post-Willie Mitchell record, "The Belle Album"
