The great lost live album of 1972
Posted by: S.T.P ()

Just found the cover art of it the other day ( [www.rollingstonesnet.com] ), and it made me think -how on earth is it possible to to hold back such a treassure for that many years? -Even the cover art is printed! I've searched for information about it, but couldn't find much, and most of it seems to be second hand info. I know there are some facts out there too, i.e. the settlement between the Decca lable and Roling Stones Records. How is it supposed to be read? My understanding has always been that after 1976 the band could release any song from the Decca period recorded live -also versions that were recorded live before 1976. I also know that Jagger has comented the banning of it's release several times in interviews between late '72 and '75. I've seen articles in old newspapers, but never found any on the internet. I'm shure there are many stories to be told that can enlighten more than myself, so please share yours!

The "official" line at the time was the Stones wanted to include Stevie
Wonder doing: Satisfaction (live)- but Decca won't allow it due to them still being pissed over the Stones leaving the label. Jagger's comment at the time
was: Screw it, if we can't release what we want on it we'll just put in on the
shelf.. - He had no idea the Taylor would quit in just a couple of years..

Yes, Stevei Wonder was a factor. Didn't Klein figure into it too? Not wanting to give them YCAGWYW ?

Thanks for your responses! Didn't know that the Stones officially blamed the banning on just that one particular song. Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter, YCAGWYW, Rambler, J.J.Flash and Street Fighting Man are songs that there could have been problems with releasing within the time period '70-'76.

Didn't Roy Carr's book (which featured the artwork) say that it was intended to be a 2 LP set--one with the Stones and one with Stevie?

I've heard that one side was supposed to be with Stevie, and the other three with the Stones. Anyway, do you remember the name of that book?

The Rolling Stones: An Illustrated Record, published in 1977.

I thought one side was going to be by Ike & Tina Turner.

I saw Stevie W. with them in Nashville, so did Ike and Tina open on other dates on this tour?

Ike & Tina was the 1969 tour. And yes about the double release of Stones &
Stevie..(now that you mention that) I don't remember Allen Klein's name coming up as the release killer only remember Decca being mentioned by the Stones camp at the time..

That was on Ya Yas. Always loved the version of "I've been loving you too long" on Gimme Shelter, and it would have been great to have on Ya Yas.

This live record is a must release!

We need it and we want it. Such force and energy in that
"All down the line" version. If the rest is up to this one, then we must have it released from the shelf. Come on now guys. Work the juridical differences out and release this one soon.

In my opinion it will top anything else they've done in "Live" - albums.

Peak of the greatest rock and roll band on earth!

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

Do we actually know that there are any legal issues about it anymore?

hearing Ahmet Ertegun Thank You Kindly playing in Bleecker Bob's one day was what turned me seriously onto Stones bootlegs, and bootlegs more generally.

mick probably doesn't see it as profitable to deal in the past. But the material is so strong, it would only win the band fans and help their back catalog. How many tours does he think the current version of the group can do? It's time to put this out.

There will be an issue as long as anyone the Stones themselves
have control of their non released material is concerned.

If Jagger has control over the particular recording then it would be released by now!

It's a goldmine for the Stones don't you think?

Yes why is Mick holding out on this album. I don't have it seen it with the boots
I would love to have it especially 1972 LIVE. I always heard they were at their peak then. I think Jagger thinks it will push the band to have to work harder to sound like it now. But it will sell. Man the Stones in '72. Wow I would get it that is for sure.

After searching this site for possible additional information on this matter, I realised that we've had several occations with treads about this album - my memory is apparently not very goodsmoking smiley
Anyway, here's a couple of links:

Still, it would be cool if there are people out there, who know anything, who would like to share it with us! - And thanks to all who've contributed alreadysmileys with beer

Here's a picture from Pittsburg:
(Don't know who took it, but I found it on Harold Colsons site)

Was this show along with the New York shows recorded for possible use on the album? According to a norwegian book by Bård Ose (I think) it was stated that they were used on the actual album...
If that's true, they could pick songs from a total of 12 shows!

Yeah-

Look at how much $$$$ Led Zep made from their DVD release of "fault" material..

But I've heard the Glimmers don't want the comparison issues that would come
up with then and now....
