OT : Thin Lizzy - (Not) Live & (not) Dangerous ?

Always loved that album from the day it came out.

Recently I read an statement, that almost (ca.70%) everything of it was re-recorded/overdubbed.

Also read that only the drum tracks remained.

Any opinions on that ?True or tale ?

Like virtually 90% of 'live' albums. Absolutely true

Just compare with live material before & after by Lizzy.
I believe a fixed percentage number is hard to say.

I posted this quote on IORR before, but I couldn´t find it. It´s from Tony Visconti, the producer of that album.

"We listened and listened and listened -- to at least 30 hours of tape recorded during many gigs, from Toronto to Philadelphia to London! We definitely had something, but the task of choosing the right takes was awesome. When we did, Phil asked if he could touch up some vocals. No harm in that -- this is commonly done for live albums because of technical faults, like microphone wire buzz and other gremlins. The trick to getting a studio vocal to sound like a convincing live vocal is to sing the song in the same way. Otherwise the live voice will poke through if the new voice is not in sync.

We spent a few days re-recording a few vocals. It went very well. Once we established a sound and a system to do this, Phil suggested that we might as well redo all the vocals. So we did. Then we noticed that Gorham and Robertson were not on mic for backing vocals half the time. If you listen closely you can hear Phil doubling the backing vocals at the same time he was singing lead! Then Phil realized that he'd missed a few notes on the bass when he was singing live. Could we replace some bass parts? "Of course!" I said. We did. The bass was harder and more precise and so ALL the bass parts were replaced. In walked Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. Since it was so easy to replace Phil's parts, could they redo theirs? "Of course!" But now it was obvious that this was not completely live anymore. The guitars, bass and vocals were replaced -- just Downey's drums and the audience reaction were left! Fortunately Downey liked his playing and we kept ALL the drums".

It's strange, because the Lizzy-shows I have heard on Wolfgang's Vault are all perfect, almost too perfect...

It's covered in detail on Visconti's website.

Believe Phil was a perfectionist, Dandelion.
But if ya listen to Germany 1974 for example ya can clearly here it aint perfect.

Thanks for the input,it might be Visconti´s statement Svartmer is referring to
which I kept somehow in mind.

It reveals obviously that the use and extension of overdubbing/editing or even
re-recording live recordings remains debatable.

And it´s clear that the Stones are no exception.Out of control of NS,for example was mentioned here often in this context being shortened about a minute.

Could be intersting as well to read how and what Jimmy Page did even to the recent
Zep live recordings,if the guy examining the whole stuff is right...

Anyway,Live & Dangerous is a great album.

<And it´s clear that the Stones are no exception.Out of control of NS,for example>

And Mick's acoustic guitar on WOAF is wiped and re-recorded by Keith...

I bought the reissue DVD of T Rex's Born To Boogie DVD a year or two ago.

Lots of great extras about making the original film including an interview with Tony Visconti.

I noticed on lots of the live footage backing vocals that nobody on screen was singing.

On a whim I actually emailed Tony Visconti using a link on his website.

Within a few hours he replied (the content of the email led me to believe it was a personal reply).

He thanked me for my kind comments about the dvd and also confirmed that the backing vocals had been overdubbed after the event.

I also have Visconti's biography and for anyone interested in great behind the scenes stories of the music scene over the last 40 years I would recommend getting a copy.

If you get the latest official release from the Lizzy camp, UK Tour 1975, you get a totally untouched recording, warts and all. Recorded in Derby, it contains for example, the embryo of Cowboy Song.

1. Fighting my way back
2. It's only money
3. Wild one
4. For those who love to live
5. Still in love with you
6. Showdown
7. Suicide
8. Rosalie
9. The rocker
10. Sha la la
11. Baby drives me crazy
12. Me and the boys
13. Cowboy song
14. Little darling
15. Sound check jam

Saw them in 74 at the Roundhouse, London. Great band. Lynott was one of THE great front men.

I saw them only once, that was April 30, 1983.
A little too much heavuy metal-ish, since they featured
that Thunder & Lightnin'-album which I never did embrace.
The albums of 74 & 75 are my favorites: Night Life & Fighting.

I had the pleasure of meeting Phil and the band a couple of times, he bought us beers, even though we were clearly under age...
Lizzy were always good with the fans, never said no when we asked for a chat and autographs. Had the pleasure of seeing the band 3 times, and Phil solo 2 times.

But it is not complete with the DVD. The bonus disc with the Derby gig included in the Live And Dangerous DVD only contains 7 songs.

Or probably tank it down at nearest torrent site
& instead savin yer money for a trip to Ireland &
maybe a donation to Phil's statue in Dublin.
There are purdy interestin' tours ya can go now in Lynott's tracks.
...As well as ya can go see his house outside London.

Why does his statue need donations? It´s been there for years, so I imagine it´s already payed for.

Guess it needs maintenance.. Or give yer dimes to a poor Irishman.
Or donate to a statue over honorable stones viking chiefs? spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

No, seriously, go and buy it! Scott Gorham could need some extra pocket money,
as could Brian "Robbo" Robertson & Brian Downey, so buy Jailbreak,
Fighting, Night Life.

Brilliant album, though it was always well-known that just about the only thing "live" on it was the audience.

Still In Love With You is absolutely stunning.

Phil was a black country lad!

"Lynott was born in Hallam Hospital (now Sandwell General Hospital) in West Bromwich (then in Staffordshire), England, the son of an Afro-Brazilian father, Cecil Parris, and an Irish mother, Philomena (aka Phyllis) Lynott, whose surname he adopted. His father left his mother just three weeks after he was born and returned to his native Brazil.[1] Phil was christened at St. Edwards Church in Selly Park, Birmingham.

Phil was initially brought up in Moss Side, Manchester where he became a Manchester United fan. While still at school, he moved to Crumlin, Dublin, to live with his grandmother, Sarah.[2] His parents reportedly kept in touch for a number of years after his birth, but Lynott did not meet his real father until the late 1970s."
